Sprint Testing: The New A/B Test – Introduction

Traditional marketing is broken.

If you’ve sensed that your once-reliable campaigns aren’t delivering like they used to, you’re not imagining things. The old playbook of precise targeting, database-driven audiences, and slow-and-steady A/B testing is fundamentally obsolete in today’s landscape. 


In the last few years, digital marketing was hit by a seismic shift that torched the tactics we took for granted.

Most teams, however, are still running on autopilot as if nothing changed – and it’s costing them.

To understand why growth engineering using Sprint Testing has emerged as the new way forward, we first have to unpack what changed and why the classic methods stopped working.

Not long ago, success in online marketing meant following a familiar formula.

Specifically, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework in 2021 flipped the data world upside down. Suddenly, every iPhone app had to ask users’ permission to track their activity across other apps and websites. And guess what? Given the choice, users overwhelmingly said “no.” 


According to early reports, over 95% of iPhone users opted out of ad tracking when ATT rolled out iOS 14.

In one swift move, the vast troves of user data that fueled digital advertising for a decade were cut off at the source. Facebook’s own CFO predicted these privacy changes would blow a $10 billion hole in the company’s ad revenue– a testament to how massively the rules changed.


Why does this matter? Because the traditional marketing methods were anchored to that data.

Those superbly targeted audiences and lookalike models were built on Facebook’s and Google’s rich databases of user behavior. Overnight, that data pipeline shriveled. Retargeting pools dried up. Lookalikes became less effective. Conversion tracking became patchy. 


In short, the engine that powered your old marketing machine lost a cylinder. As one ad strategist put it, Apple’s move “upended the digital advertising industry and crippled advertisers’ ability to know whether their mobile ads were working”.


It’s crucial to realize: this wasn’t just a tech nuisance – it was an industry earthquake. Yet many didn’t feel the shock immediately. The rollout of iOS14’s changes was gradual, and some advertisers kept coasting on old momentum for a few months. But as the data gaps widened and campaigns faltered, the uncomfortable truth set in: the old way of doing things was broken for good. 


Marketing teams that had long relied on meticulous targeting and multi-week split tests suddenly found themselves flying blind and painfully slow to adapt.

From Databases and Lookalikes to Real-Time Data Signals

The iOS14/ATT privacy crackdown was the loudest wake-up call, but it’s part of a bigger theme: marketings’s center of gravity has shifted.

We’ve moved from a world where success came from leveraging stored user data (past behavior, demographics, cookie pools) to a world where success comes from harnessing real-time, live data signals. Think about it – when you can no longer easily track and target users based on a rich database of their history, what’s left?

You’re no longer saying “Facebook, here’s my ideal buyer profile, go find them.” That strategy was database-anchored and it’s now on life support. Instead, you’re saying “Facebook, here are 50 different ideas – different images, messages, angles – show them broadly and tell me which ones people engage with.” This is marketing via signals: you throw out many probes and see immediately what resonates.

The beauty is that today’s algorithms thrive on this approach.

When you feed a platform a broad test, its machine learning system gets to watch tons of real user interactions and quickly learn what works. It’s like giving the algorithm a richer training set in real time, rather than constraining it with your preconceived notion of the audience.

In fact, savvy advertisers have discovered that Facebook’s algorithm didn’t weaken after losing third-party data – it got smarter at using other hints.

Deprived of easy tracking, the AI now focuses on the content and on-platform behavior signals. It zeroes in on which ads people are reacting to, rather than leaning on who those people are. This is a profound shift: the creative (your ad content) has become the targeting.


Most marketers haven’t caught up to this reality. They’re still running split tests and narrow targeting as if it’s 2019. They keep tweaking small variables and grinding out minor improvements, perplexed that their results aren’t scaling.

Meanwhile, a new breed of marketer is skipping ahead and letting rapid experimentation guide them.

Let’s be blunt – right now most marketers are lagging behind this shift.

Many advertisers failed to internalize this. They kept trying to target ultra-specific niches and refine their old funnels, only to find their performance declining.

Meanwhile, those who adapted realized they could lean on the platforms’ AI more and their own old playbook less.

Facebook’s algorithm isn’t dead at all – it’s evolved. It’s learned to make do with less explicit user data by using predictive modeling and by paying more attention to engagement signals. In plain English: Facebook still knows which ads are good; it just doesn’t spoon-feed you the same reporting detail as before. If you’re waiting for the old metrics to tell you what’s working, you’ll be waiting too long. The winners are those who embrace new metrics and methods to let the system optimize.


The uncomfortable truth is that the slow, cautious marketing approach has become a liability.

If you’re running one test a month, iterating ever so carefully, and relying on old targeting methods, you’re bringing a knife to a gunfight. Your competition – or at least the savvy ones – are iterating daily and letting the machine learning fire on all cylinders. In the time it takes you to conclude a single A/B test, they’ve run ten. In the amount you spend to get one winner, they’ve found five. This speed advantage compounds. Every day you stick to the old habits, you fall further behind.


It’s not easy to admit. Marketers pride themselves on being data-driven experimenters. But that pride can turn into stubbornness, sticking to a “tried and true” method that isn’t truly tried or true in the new environment. The first step is recognizing the game has changed and that doing nothing is the riskiest move of all. The good news? For those willing to adapt, the opportunity on the other side is huge.

The New Reality: Algorithms Spot Winners in a Flash

One of the most game-changing realizations in this post-ATT world is just how fast the ad platforms can identify winning ideas.

We’re not talking weeks or even days – we’re talking hours, sometimes minutes. The modern Facebook algorithm (and its peers) is extraordinarily adept at predicting an ad’s performance almost immediately. In fact, it often knows within the first $1–$2 of ad spend whether that new idea you’re testing is a super win, a decent try, or a total dud.


Think about what that means. In the time it takes to buy a cup of coffee, the algorithm has already sized up your new ad creative against its vast trove of user behavior patterns.

It’s measuring dozens of micro-signals: Who stops to watch your video in the first 3 seconds? Who clicks “Learn More”? How fast is the scroll on your image post? These signals pour in instantly. If the early signs point to “dud,” the platform will throttle back impressions on that ad – essentially saving you from spending more on a loser. If the signals scream “winner,” Facebook will start funneling more impressions to it, even with minimal spend, because it sees people liking it. The system’s goal is to get the best content in front of users (that’s how they make money too), so it has become incredibly efficient at sorting the wheat from the chaff fast.


To an old-school marketer, that might sound like heresy. We were taught to wait for statistical significance, to be patient and gather enough data. But the reality is the AI is doing a form of instant statistical triage.

It won’t give you a p-value on $2 of spend, but it will make a prediction and act on it. And more often than not, it’s right. This is why you’ll notice, for example, when you run five new ad creatives, one or two might get the lion’s share of the budget/impressions while others barely get off the ground. The platform isn’t “unfairly” favoring one at random – it’s detected that those one or two are likely to perform better and is allocating budget accordingly. In essence, it’s telling you which creative is best almost immediately.


What does this empower you to do? Simply put, it empowers you to test at scale, at breakneck speed, and at very low cost.

If a platform can discern a winner (or loser) in a couple bucks’ worth of spend, you don’t need to spend $50 or $100 per variant to decide if it has potential. You can fire off dozens of ideas, give each a tiny trickle of budget, and let the algorithm’s early reads sort them out.

50 Tests in 24 Hours (for the Price of Dinner)

Let’s put this into perspective with some numbers, because this is where the jaw really drops.

In the new paradigm, you can realistically test 50 different creative variables in 24 hours for around $100 in spend. Yes, you read that right: fifty ideas – be it different images, headlines, ad copy angles, or audience hooks – in a single day, for roughly the cost of a nice team lunch.


Contrast that with the traditional A/B testing approach most teams are used to.

How many ideas do you typically test in a day or even a week? One? Two, if you’re aggressive?How much are you spending per classic A/B test? Hundreds, sometimes thousands, to get enough data for a statistically significant result on just one comparison. How long does that A/B test take to declare a winner? A week, two weeks, a month? All while your opportunity cost is ticking upward.


Now consider the Sprint Testing approach: launch 50 mini-tests today and by tomorrow morning you have a clear sense of which 3-5 ideas out of those 50 are worth pouring gasoline on, and which 45 are duds to throw out. Fifty ideas tested, five winners found, in one day, for $100.

Traditional Split Testing: You test 2–3 variants at a time, often sequentially. You might allocate $500–$1,000 per test and wait 1–2 weeks for enough data. In a month, you might complete a handful of tests, and hopefully uncover one or two mildly better performers. It’s a slow crawl, and you’re essentially betting the farm on a very small set of ideas because tests are expensive in time and money.

Sprint Testing: You test dozens of variants in parallel. You allocate maybe $2 per variant (say $100 total for 50 ideas) and let them all run simultaneously for a short burst. Within 24–48 hours, you have directionally clear results. In a month, you could easily test a few hundred ideas at this rate, uncovering multiple breakthrough winners. It’s a rapid sprint, where testing is cheap and plentiful – your winners more or less emerge from a big pool, rather than eking out a tiny edge in a head-to-head duel.


Ask yourself: How much are you spending right now per A/B test, and how long do you wait to get a result? If the answer is something like “a few hundred bucks and a couple of weeks for each test,” that should make you a bit uncomfortable.

Because somewhere out there, a competitor might be spending that same few hundred bucks to test 100 different ideas in those same two weeks. Who is more likely to stumble on a game-changing ad or a message that resonates like wildfire? The one who tested 2 ideas, or the one who tested 100? It’s not even a contest.


This is the stark new reality. Speed and volume of testing have become a competitive advantage in and of themselves. It’s a numbers game: the more shots on goal you take, the more chances you have to score big.

And thanks to modern ad algorithms, those shots on goal are dirt cheap and incredibly informative. The marketers who internalize this are treating their creative strategy like a Silicon Valley growth experiment – rapid iteration, fail-fast-and-learn, double down on winners immediately. Those who don’t are left scratching their heads why their one-out-of-three A/B test “winner” barely moved the needle.

The Only Logical Path Forward

All of this leads to a simple conclusion: if you’re serious about growth, Sprint Testing isn’t optional – it’s the only logical path forward.
